Analysis of JAWs

Here i have watched a short clip taken from jaws and analysed it describing what it is that makes the audience want to keep watching, what sort of devices are used if any and how they have used these devices effectively and how do we know this is a thriller what is shown that lets the audience know it is a thriller.

Here is a video of Jaws in this short clip there has been a few techniques used one of them is a cliffhanger this has been used leaving the audience on the edge. A cliffhanger is a technique which will often feature a main character in precarious or difficuilt dilema, or confronted with a shocking relevation, this will entice the audience and make them want to keep watching to see how the situation might resolve itself.

Referring to the cliffhanger this also leaves the audience eniticed wanting to watch the film this will be because they will want to know what might happen next, will the shark ever be caught or will it take another victims life. We are given the impression that this is a thriller because of what goes on in the scene clearly expresses you may expect to be shocked and feel suspense during the film and these techniques are often referred to thriller films.

Thriller devices

There will be certain devices that will be used during a thriller film. A thriller device that may be used is macguffin (maggufin) this is a plot device that will help to motivate the characters and help to advance the story which will have small or no relevance to the story.

In some stories there will be a mechanical element in the story that will usally crop up. For instance in spy stroies it will always be the papers that will crop up during the spy film.

Another technique that may be used during a thriller film is the psychological thriller this is the suspense which would have been created by the psychological thriller which will often come from two or more characters who are preying upon one anothers minds, by either playing deceptive games with the other or just by trying to demolish the other characters mental state.

There will also be other things that a thriller will usally contain and two of these are cliffhangers and red herrings. The cliffhanger will be used to leave the audience on the edge of there seat maybe leaving them with not knowing what will happen next in the film making them want to watch on. Red herrings is the name given by a device which intends to divert the audience from the truth or an item of significance.

Brief introduction

I have created a blog which will be used to describe what I have done to create my short piece 2 minute thriller film for my As level media studies work. I will have regular updates of what our group have added to the short film. I will also be having a look into the thriller genre and what techniques are used to make a successful thriller film.
